Vegetables
While we try to carry all of the vegetables below our selection is subject to availability.
ASPARAGUS
Plant roots in trench, 6" deep and 18" apart in well drained soil. Direct
sunlight. Plant should grow undisturbed for the first season. Plants take 2-3
years to come into full production. Spears are ready to cut when they are 5-8"
long. When cutting, cut only for 8-10 weeks, or until appearance of thin spears
indicate the roots are nearing exhaustion. Then permit plants to grow.
Jersey Knight
Male hybrid with fewer female seed plants. High yielding, excellent
fusarium tolerance and high resistance to rust. Large attractive spear. Live
longer than male - female varieties.
Mary Washington
Most common asparagus. Early large stalks. Tender and very productive.
Sweet Purple
Deep burgundy coloration to the spears. The sugar content is 20% higher, which allows
it to be eaten raw. When cooked, it has a mild, nutty flavor. The spears are larger and tender and are
less stringy than other types.
BROCCOLI
PREMIUM CROP
A large, fine-textured 8-9" head for midseason harvest. Produces a
few side shoots after harvesting. 58 days to maturity. Plant 24" apart, with 30-36"

BRUSSEL SPROUTS
Large sprouts are closely set and easy to remove. 90 days to

CHINESE
Mellow flavored cabbage has loose blue green leaves on a rounded

DANISH BALLHEAD
This hardy, late type of ballhead cabbage is great for winter
storage. Approximately 110 days to maturity.
EARLY
The round, green heads can grow 5-6" in diameter. 65-70 days to

The round, deep red heads grow to 7" across. 80 days to maturity.

CAULIFLOWER
The large plants form delicious white heads. When heads are formed
and hard, they should be blanched by bringing the leaves together and tying.
Should be planted 18" apart, with 30-36" between rows. Approximate maturity is
55 days.
CELERY
Long green stalks are crisp and tender. Best grown in a cooler area
in the garden. Can shoot to seed if planted to early. Plant 6" apart, with
18-24" between rows. Approximately 110 days to maturity.
CUCUMBER
Best planted in the morning or evening with little root disturbance. Keep
protected from winds when first planted. Plant 1-2 feet apart, with 3-6 feet between
rows.
ARMENIAN
The light green, thin skinned fruit with deep ridges has a good
mild flavor. 55-70 days to maturity.
BURPLESS
The smooth, dark green fruits have fewer seeds than other slicing
cucumbers. The fruit grows 9-10". Approximate maturity is 62 days.
LEMON
These round yellow cucumbers have juicy, sweet flavor. Approximate maturity is 65-70 days.
MARKETMORE
This is a vigorous variety for home gardens. The dark green fruit
is slightly tapered and can reach 8-9" long. Approximately 66 days.
PICKLING
Slightly tapered fruits are good for canning. Thin skinned fruit
grows 4-5" long, but may be picked smaller. Approximately 54 days to maturity.
SALAD BUSH
Dwarf, bushy plants have a slightly tapered, 6-8" fruit. Good for
small gardens or tub growing. Approximately 62 days to maturity.
SWEET SLICE
Dark green fruit has a sweet bitterfree skin. Fruit can grow 10-12"
long. Approximately 63 days to maturity.
EGGPLANT
Eggplants are better harvested early to keep from getting seedy. Also, this
encourages more fruitproduction. Plant 18" apart, with 24-30" between rows.
DUSKY
Oval shaped, glossy black fruit is early with a high yield.
Approximately 63 days to maturity.
JAPANESE
The purple fruit will grow 12" long, 2" in diameter. This plant has
very high yields. Approximately 65 days to maturity.
GOURDS
Gourds grow on long vines similar to pumpkins. They can be trained
to grow up trellises and fences if the fruit is small. Gourds mature in 110-130
days, or leave the gourds on the plants until the first frost. Plant 2' apart,
with 5' between rows for the small gourds. The larger gourds and the birdhouse
gourds will require more room.

HORSERADISH
Plant roots 1' apart in late winter or early spring. Large, coarse
looking herb used as a pungent food relish. Grows best in rich moist soil where
it is cool.
LETTUCE
Lettuce grows best in a cooler part of the garden. Plant 6" apart,
with 14-18" between rows.
BUTTERCRUNCH
This larger, slower bolting lettuce does not require the cool
growing conditions. Bibb type lettuce. 65 days to maturity.
HEAD
The large tight heads produce crisp, tender and tasty leaves. Does
well in a cooler part of the garden. 85 days to maturity.
LEAF
Medium green leaves. Does well in a cooler part of the garden. 76
days to maturity.
PARRIS ISLAND
Similar to the Romaine Lettuce, but adapted to tolerate hot temperatures.
80 days to maturity.
MELON
AMBROSIA
The salmon colored fruit has a sweet flavor that is unique to other
cantaloupes. Thick netting on the fruit. Approximately 86 days to maturity.
BURPEE'S HYBRID
Slightly oval fruits have sweet, orange flesh. Heavy netting covers
the fruit. Does not store well and is susceptible to cracking at the ends.
Approximately 86 days to maturity.
CRENSHAW
The Crenshaw variety (110 days) is somewhat acorn-shaped, pointed
at the blossom end, and 8 by 6 1/2 inches. Fruit is yellow and green, rough,
corrugated, with no netting. Flesh is salmon colored, thick, juicy, and sweet
in flavor. Crenshaw requires careful handling and packing for shipping.

GOLD STAR
The slightly oval, salmon colored fruit is good for eating. Fruit
has heavy netting with distinctive ribs. Approximately 85 days to germination.
HONEYDEW
The fruit is round in shape and about 5 inches in diameter. It is
resistant to powdery and downy mildew. Fruit is whitish at maturity, smooth
with no ribs. Flesh is lime green in color. Approximately 95 days to maturity.
MISSION
F-1 Hybrid. The 2 to 3 pound fruit has orange flesh with a good,
sweet taste. The fruit has a heavy net. The plants consistently perform well.
Approximately 80 days to maturity.
ONIONS
Onions can be planted in the garden early. Plant 2" apart, with
14-18" between rows.
RED
Globe shaped, large fruit has a bright red skin whit red and white
flesh. Approximately 110 days to maturity. Stores well.
WALLA WALLA
Considered one of the sweetest onions on the market. The large
bulbs are brown with a yellow flesh, slightly flattened in shape. Approximately
130 days to maturity. Does not store
well.
WHITE SPANISH
The large globes have a firm, pure white flesh. Approximately 110
days to maturity. Stores well.
YELLOW SWEET SPANISH
Very large, sweet globes are golden yellow. Excellent storing
quality. Approximately 115 days to maturity.
PEPPERS, BELL
Plant 18" apart, with rows 24-30" apart.
BIG BERTHA
The elongated glossy green fruit can reach up to 7" long with thick
walls and a firm shape. Approximately 72 days to maturity.
CHOCOLATE
Medium to large fruit is very sweet. The peppers mature from green
to a chocolate color. Approximately 85 days to maturity.
GOLDEN BELL
Large, tapered bell peppers turn a deep golden yellow. The compact,
upright plants produce well. Approximately 70 days to maturity.
GYPSY
Fruits are wedge shaped, 3 to 5 inches long, yellow maturing to a
orange red, sweet and tasty. Approximately 60 days to maturity.
IVORY BELL
This first ever Ivory white pepper has sweet fruits good for fresh
eating, salads and cooking. Approximately 68 days to maturity.
JUPITER
A non-hybrid, open pollinated variety. Large, blocky, 4-lobed,
sweet flavored fruits have thick green walls that ripen to red. Virus tolerant,
sturdy 30" plants with a dense leaf canopy to protect high yields.

LILAC BELL
The fruit matures from ivory to lavender to red. The ivory flesh has a sweet, juicy flavor.

RED BEAUTY
The brilliant bright red fruits are extra thick-walled, mostly
4-lobed, and hold up to a long time in refrigeration. Heavy flesh is sweet and

PEPPERS, HOT
ANAHEIM
Large fruits, 6 to 8 inches long, have a medium hot flavor. The
fruit matures from a deep green color to a brilliant red. Very popular for
drying. Approximately 78 days to maturity.
CAYENNE
The long, 5" fruits are green when young, ripening to a bright red.
The fiery hot flavor is good for seasoning. Approximately 75 days to maturity.
HABANERO
One of the hottest peppers you can grow. The small 1" fruits are
light green turning to a fiery orange. Handle with care, using plastic gloves
to pick. Approximately 95-100 days to harvest.
HUNGARIAN WAX
Tapered yellow fruits have a thin wall. Vigorous plants keep fruit
off the ground. Used mostly for pickling. Approximately 70 days to maturity.
JALAPENO
The 3" fruits are hot to the taste. The dark green fruits can be
picked green or left on the bush to mature to a red color. Approximately 75
days to maturity.
RED CHERRY
The rounded fruits are green when young and mature to red. Fruits
have a slightly sweet flavor. Found at many salad bars. Approximately 78 days
to maturity.
SANTA FE GRANDE
Also known as a "Golden Jalapeno". The fruit is the same shape and
size as a Jalapeno, but a little bit hotter. Very productive plants.
Approximately 75 days to maturity.
SERRANO
Very hot, thin walled fruit can be green, red, or orange. The large
plants grow 24-30" high and wide. Approximately 75 days to maturity.
SWEET BANANA
The very sweet fruits with little trace of hotness can be eaten at
any size, but best at 6-7". Light yellow coloring when ripe. Vigorous, erect
plants hold peppers off the ground. Approximately 70 days.
PUMPKIN
These large, vining plants need a large space to grow. The miniature
pumpkin plants can be trained to grow on fences or trellises. Plant in hills 6-8'
apart, with 10-12' between rows.
BIG MAX
This pinkish-orange pumpkin can reach up to 100 pounds. The
fine-grained orange flesh is good for pies and freezing. 110 days to maturity.
HOWDENS
The medium to large deep orange fruit weighs approximately 20-30
pounds. Approximately 115 days to maturity.
JACK BE LITTLE
True miniature pumpkin. The deep orange, ribbed fruits grow about
2" high and 3" wide. High yielding plants. Approximately 85 days to maturity.
PRIZE WINNER
The smooth, glossy, extra large fruit has a good orange appearance.
Pumpkins can weigh from 50-200 pounds.

SUGAR AND PIE
This variety is excellent for pies. Small round fruits have deep
ribs. The flesh is deep orange-yellow, fine grained and sweet. Approximately
100 days to maturity.
RHUBARB
Leafstalks are used like fruit in sauces and pies. Rhubarb crowns
have to be planted shallow. At least 1/4 to 1/3 of the crown surface should be
above ground level. If the bud itself is below the soil line it may rot off and
fail to grow. Plant in well drained soil. Space 3'-4' apart. Permit plants to
grow 2 full seasons before harvesting. Never remove all leaves from a single
plant. Stop harvesting when slender leafstalks appear. After harvest, feed and
water freely. Cut out any blossom stalks that appear.
Crimson
Reddest variety. Tends to be red all the way through.
Victoria
Color variation between green and red. Red appears first, then
turns green with sunshine. Tends to grow seedstalks on an annual basis.
SQUASH, SUMMER
Place 2-3 plants per hill, and space hills 3-4' apart.
PETER PAN
This summer squash has round, scalloped edge fruits that are pale
green when young, turning creamy white when mature. Pick fruit when young to
obtain best flavor and texture. Approximately 54 days to maturity.
YELLOW CROOKNECK
The bright yellow fruit
has tender, cream flesh. Fruit has the best flavor when eaten young, which is
when it is 4 to 8 inches long. 50 days to maturity.
YELLOW STRAIGHTNECK
Very smooth, yellow fruits are slim and tapered in shape. The very

This unique squash has a delicious, spaghetti like interior. The

SWEET MAMA
Excellent storage. Smooth, dark green fruit set close to center of

WATERMELON
The use of plastic mulch will conserve moisture, suppress weed growth, and
assist in an earlier harvest by warming the soil. Plants should be spaced two to a hill,
three to four feet apart, with six to eight feet between rows. Water only when the top layer
of the soil is dry, with more water being applied as the fruit grows larger. Harvest when the
ground spot changes from white to a creamy yellow or when thumped will have a dull, muffled tone.
CRIMSON SWEET
The firm, crimson fruit is firm and fine grained with small seeds
and high sugar content. The light green rinds are marked with darker green
